Kickin' It Old School Day 31: Celebrate!

I'm so exciting that Kickin' It Old Skool has been kicking it  in such an awesome way.  We've persisted through no internet for a third of it, but that didn't stop us!  It just goes to show that if you want to make it happen, there is a way to do it.

On this last day of the challenge, i want to celebrate that we were able to make it happen all the way through with memes, pictures and stories.  To celebrate making new friends and rekindling to blog friends from years and years ago.

Congratulations everyone!

One Sentence Saturday: I Love This Quote ~ Kickin' It Old Skool Day #21

Today is Day #21 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing a quote we love. Here is mine:

"You only have to do it the first time once"

It's also my quote! I said this way back when I was in school and worried about finding my classes. Then I realized I only had to find them the first time once, and I'd know where they are! Over the years I've realized this applies to so many situations, and I quote it a fair amount.

I feel like also adding this first-ness to yesterdays Firsts Meme, but then I realized that was the *first* prompt I missed. Something kind of funny about that - so I'm going to let it be and keeping to the rules of: Be Nice, Have Fun. :)

Favourite Songs: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #16

Today is Day #16 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing our favourite songs.

Ah, music. Nothing takes you back to a time and place quicker than a song. Just tonight One by U2 came on the radio and took me back to when that song came out. It's not my fave though. It's a good song, just not my fave. I don't think I have one song that is an all time fave, but I like to collect songs all the time. I may not have tons of infusions of new music, but thankfully I don't get tired of songs I love, and happily listen to them over and over again. And I love all kinds of music. I used to joke that I listened to everything but pop and country, however since then... I've started listening to both pop *and* country! I guess that means there is room for it all! And here are a few of my recent, and all time, favourites:

According to iTunes my most listened to song is: Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow Tree - Rosanne Cash

My favourite duet is Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave and Kylie Minogule.

My favourite Johnny Cash song changes a lot, but at the moment it's Thirteen, but Daddy Sang Bass and Down There By The Train often win the fave spot. And yes, I'm totally allowed to consistently have a whole category that's just Johnny Cash.

My favourite emotionally wrenching song is Possibility - Lykke LiI know if from the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack.

My favourite song to see, and sing, in concert is Closer to Fine by The Indigo Girls. It is a beautiful, powerful experience to be in a crowd singing this song.

My Never-Thought-It-Could-Be-Cool-And-It's-Actually-The-Coolest is The Misty Mountains Cold from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Confession time: I always skipped the songs in the books in Middle Earth and never felt all gooey about them. But oh my goodness hearing this song in the first trailer of The Hobbit hit me straight in my heart, and I knew and understood what this movie could be. And it was.

Currently, my favourite songs to sing is Skyfall by Adele. It kind of feels oh-so-last year to say that, but I don't care. No Free Love In This Town - Big Chief is a close overall second and long-time fave for that category.

My favourite new/2013 song is: Royals by Lorde; and after seeing the video I continue to find it crazy strange that it's used in a commercial for the show Reign.

My favourite nostalgic songs are: Celebration - Kool and the Gang, Party Train - The Gap Band and Atomic Dog - George Clinton. And looking at that, I think I need to bring back some funk music into my life.

Who Do You Love? Kickin' It Old Skool Day #15

Today is Day #15 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing pictures of Who We Love.

I heard the term "Caturday" earlier this year, and although I think it technically means lazing around like a cat on Saturday, I like to think of it as lazing around WITH your cat on Saturday. Which is what I'm doing here.

I love my cat. I've had him for 14 years (egads!), and he's been with me through every crazy small and strange apartment I've lived in through all those years. Even though he wakes me up in the middle of the night, almost every night, I still love him. And he loves everyone he meets, follows them around and gives the big purrs.

My First....Apartment: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #13

Today is Day #13 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing a first. And a first of our choice. I chose: My First Apartment.

With the recent move and another move somewhere in the future, I've thought a lot about all the different places I've lived over the years. So much so that I sat down and counted them all out and it was quite the list. I don't remember the number, but it was more than 15 places. Craziness. And all of them hold many memories.

My first apartment was actually a room in 3-storey house. There were 7 of us in the house, plus 2 guys in the basement apartment (something I didn't know until months of living there). I had a pretty big room on the second floor, with two big windows and a non-working fireplace that I stuffed things in as storage. The wooden floors were unfinished and the first night I got a huge splinter, so I had to wear shoes or slippers indoors. Even so, I was thrilled to be downtown because it was, well, downtown. I moved in just a week or so before starting at OCA and I used to run down the stairs and fly out the door to get to class. Or to get to the club, although I didn't do my make up at the apartment but rather while I waited for the streetcar (and usually in winter). It was the place of the party of with too much Goldschlager and the first Christmas I hosted. I make turkey soup for the first time and I also accidentally melted plastic onto the stove while doing a school project. I left a few months early on my lease to move in with a friend, but for those 8 months it holds a lot of memories and was a good place to crash and nothing was too far from home.

I almost wasn't able to come up for a picture for this one, as I have no pictures from that period of time in my life. But then I remembered one thing that I have that isn't in storage that I've had since that time: My Sealtest milk crate. I have no idea where I got it, but I know that it used to sit under the desk my TV was on at my first apartment. And voila! A picture. Of course as they are so versatile it currently has a different function: as the standing place for the lil Christmas Tree in my room.

Show and Tell: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #10

Today is Day 10 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are doing a show and tell!

I'm showing my current knitting project with is the Mosey legwarmers that I'm making for my sister Jamie. I know the knitting in the round on many needles can freak people out, so I hope I didn't do that; but I so prefer it to sewing up seams at the end of the project. Even though I've made them twice before, I have to transcribe the pattern into Shannon shorthand as my knitting patterns along with so many other things are currently in storage. Thank goodness it's online!

Favourite Movies: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #9

Today is Day #9 the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing our favourite movies.

Some of my faves include the ones shown above: Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Twilight, Big Trouble in Little China, King Arthur (2004) and The Wild Hunt.  There are lots more, but many of my films are in storage and couldn't make the picture but hold true in my heart. You should have seen me FREAK OUT when I realized the lunacy of packing the Aliens Quadrilogy. It was quite a moment.

There are also many films that I like to enjoy during the holiday season: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (and now also The Hobbit), The Harry Potter Series and King Arthur. I recently I figured out that the common denominator is that I either saw them for first time during the holidays or they either have snow in them. And if I could find myself a copy of The Dog Who Stopped The War, that would be on the holiday list too.  If anyone is looking or a non-traditional holiday movie, I highly recommend the Finnish film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Fair warning: it's not for kid, even though it's a Christmas film.

I'm so curious to see everyone's posts!  I can't wait to dive in to the links today.

ST:TNG 6.17 Birthright (Part II) ~ Star Trek: The Next Generation Re-Watch

It's time to get to Worf's part of the story in 6.17 Birthright (Part II).

Images Source: TrekCore

Star Trek: The Next Generation Re-Watch continues with ...

Birthright (Part II)
Season 6, Episode 17

Story:
  • We left off with a cliffhanger of Worf being captured after entering a Romulan prison camp after he followed a lead that his father may be there. Although Mogh is not there, Worf finds that the group of Romulans and Klingons living together. Covertly, but peacefully.

What I remembered about this episode:
  • I remember that I always forgot that Worf doesn't find his Dad. I am always confused by this, as I never really got the point of the story to follow that lead and it to be a dead end.
What I see differently:
  • At first glance I thought this story was about retaining and embracing ones culture, but after pondering it for a bit I see that it's more about what happens when we are distanced from or do not even know our own culture (which is similar to Birthright Part I). Although I love seeing Klingon culture, the fact that this is actually a combination of Romulans and Klingons makes the all-Klingon all-the-time sentiment a bit one-sided. Especially given that Ba'el is both Klingon and Romulan.
  • I think that Ba'el, the girl that Worf becomes a little involved with on the planet is a bit young for him.
  • Poor Michael Dorn, he had to wear that all black one piece type covert suit for the entire freaking episode!
What I take away from this episode
  • Not too much, this one never really stuck with me although in general I like episodes with Klingons involved. For a re-watch, it's not super excited as the set up is "Worf in Danger! They won't let him leave!", but I know he will be fine so there is no tension. I don't totally agree with the ideas they present on culture and identity, and certainly am not a fan of captivity, but in generally just am confused that the guy from the beginning isn't Mogh. I always thought it would be a trick ending that he was Worf's dad, but Worf didn't realize it. But...that's not what happens.
Left Off At
  • Worf leaves with the many (or all?) of the children of the camp, and brings them to The Enterprise with the explanation that they are survivors of a crash.

Even though I just jumped back on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Re-Watch train, I've decided to take a break from this until the new year as so much is going on this month. That way I can really sit and enjoy the episodes, as well as the posts about them.

Share Your First Blog Post: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #6

Today is Day #6 of the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing our first blog post and what we've learned or how you've changed since then.

Here is my first blog post:

Welcome to Planet Shannon

Welcome to Planet Shannon, where everything is within reach!

I have often noticed that I may, perchance, have a different view of the world. Often my family joked that I was left on the doorstep and they suspected I was from Mars. Initially I denied this of course but now I think that there might have been something to it, however Mars is far too warm for my comfort so I believe it must have been another planet, and what better name for my homeworld than Planet Shannon! Its an ideal place where you can always reach what you need (my house for example, wouldn't have shelves that require climbing on the counter to get to), nothing ever will shrink in the dryer, you never forget your lunch, your cats sleep at the same time you do and there is lots and lots of tea.

I will be exploring my focuses through this blog, which at the moment are: film, fashion finance, fun, family & friends! Amazing they all begin with the letter F! I guess at the moment I am exploring the continent where all things begin with F, shall we name the continent? How about Fashinilmamends! Sounds good to me!

Destination: Fashinilmamends ahead!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's hard to believe that post is from well over 7 years ago now.  So many things have changed.  It's wild to think that in that time I've gone from not even knowing how to insert a picture (the above is from a week into blogging), to knowing how to tweak HTML to sometimes just writing it in HTML.  Blogger itself has changed, adding new features some of which I love (scheduling! custom-permalink! links not breaking at the bat of an eyelash!) and some not so much (formatting the HTML in Pages). It's still often a fine dance of trying to get things exactly how I want, but that's what the preview button is for.  And I don't think we even used to always have that!
One of the most intensive things I blogged through was 101 Things in 1001 Days, which really highlighted what I was interested in, and even led to creating other blogs and learning new skills.  That was a huge experience for me.  But over the years, I've often enjoyed going back to look at old posts to simply remember what I was up to at any given point.  To remember what year did I have that birthday party, or attended a particular event.  It's a walk down memory lane and I can tell where I was living, working, what I was focused on, and of course a source of many, many cat pictures.
I haven't always been active here at Planet Shannon, and in 2011 I barely had any posts at all.  I spent many years focused on my film blog, but sadly I had to close that door.   But other blogging adventures have begun including sharing a picture of my day along with my sisters over at Under the Willow Tree,  and sharing the awesomeness of paranormal TV along with my sister Suzie at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural.
I've felt differently about blogging over the years.  It started of a whole world of fun, a way to track things, participate in things, connect with people and as a way to share.  And then sometimes it spiraled into the land of 'shoulds', with self-pressured obligation getting in the way.  I've decided to change my perspective and now always keep in mind what my goal is: to have fun, to share and ...well, to track things.  I can't help it!  I love tracking.  I also use it to create reference materials (like online TV watching guides).  But at the forefront, I try to remember that I want blogging to be fun.  I know I'm always going to challenge myself, and I can't help but create projects and want to share them! But it's important that the process or sharing it to be enjoyable too. I'm still working on that, but I'm happy to be back here and working on it here at Planet Shannon.
10 Things About Me: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #5
Today is Day #5 at the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing 10 Things About Me! Let's get started!
1. I'm a huge Star Trek fan, especially the classics: The Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
2. I've always loved hanging out with my sisters and going though magazines, and my brother is always welcome although I don't think it's quite his thing :)
3. I love lions. And cats. And cat-like creature actually.
4. As a general practice, I never ask a question that I would not answer in return.
5. I love fruit, and usually intent to just buy what is on sale but when I'm in the store I often just follow my nose.
6. I've always loved to share.
7. I'm a recent converter to reading via Kobo. Which conveniently (or serendipitously) coincides with the fact that all but 3 of my books are in storage.
8. I love the tarot, and keep wanted to get back in the practice of working with my cards.
9. I've been blogging for 7 years! I've had many blogs over the years, and definitely taken a hiatus or two but this one is my original, and most consistent, home.
10. I'm a hard-core completist. Although I had to re-evaluate that after watching all of Stargate SG-1.
Weather Wednesday: Kickin' It Old Skool Day #4
Today is Day #4 at the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon we are sharing how we experience The Weather.
It's a gray day here in Toronto. This is a time of year where we could easily be experiencing snow, but today it's just gray and about 4C. Cold but not so could I couldn't sneak a few pictures outside without having to bundle up. This isn't my favourite weather by far, but there is an eternal-like calm to days like this. It doesn't feel like we'll get blind sighted by a storm or have a big change in any direction temperature wise, but that leaves it feeling a little meh.
BUT. It's a great kind of day to have ridiciously amounts of tea and coffee and feel completely justified in not going out. And there are leaves on the ground to look at, crunch through or play in if you do decided to go out. So, there is always a plus side. The picture was taken in the very early morning, before I even wrote my morning pages, and obviously I'm not that awake yet!
  5. Paint the wood, or always leave it au natuel? If it's particle-board-ish than paint it, but otherwise I think I've converted to au natual (sealed though, because I'm messy).
[ WHITE ]
  1. What's the first thing you think of when you think of white? Kitchen cupboards, in particular the ones in one of Jamie's apartments that we painted. Several times.
  2. Closest white thing to you? My to do list notebook.
  3. Do you always try to keep the peace? Yes.
  4. Do you like to play in the snow? I like looking at the snow from inside.  I find it a little hard to plan in these days.
  5. Are you afraid of going to the doctors or dentist? I don't normally like it, but I have build up a lot of trust with my health care folks over the years.
[ BLACK ]
  1. What's the first thing you think of when you think of black? The never ending search for the perfect black pants.
  2. Closest black thing to you? My phone.
  3. Are you sophisticated or silly? Silly.
  4. Do you have a lot of secrets? Maybe.  I'm a little stumped on that one.
  5. What's the new black? Black is *always* the new black.
Time Capsule: Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon Day 2
It's Day 2 of the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon and today's prompt is Time Capsule. Let's take a moment to capture this moment in time:
1. What are you reading?
2. What are you watching?
 I'm in the final push of my SciFi Surprize Series and a Teen Wolf Season 3 Watch, but most recently I watched Byzantium, a fantastic vampire film starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.
3. What are you listening to?
A lot of Johnny Cash, but for newer-stuff I'm totally loving Royals by Lorde
4. What are you loving?
Being excited about things. It's a nice change!
5. What are you wearing?
Jammies! Hehe.  They include awesome capri-length track pants from Old Navy. So nice to have non-hem-needed options for us short folk.
6. What are you creating?
I'm knitting a red poncho (see above!) and a pair of legwarmers.
7. What are you looking forward to?
The second Hobbit movie.  I loved the first one so much, I am excited to dive back into that world.
Looking at the different answers, I realize almost every thing is related to some kind of project or challenge. That's kind of weird. True, but weird.
De-Selfie: Kickin' It Old Skool Day 1
It's Day 1 of the Kickin' It Old Skool Blog-a-thon and what is more Old Skool than a self portrait?
I've taken a lot of pictures since I've started blogging, but in recent years I've taken fewer and fewer pictures of myself, so I was excited about this opportunity to get back to the practice of the self portrait. I thought about what I wanted to look like, what background to use (1 colour, many colours, no colour?), to smile or not to smile, what vibe I wanted to portray (happy, thoughtful, wistful, forlorn?), location, preparation, etc.
Of course when I sit down and looked at the pics, the one that wanted to be the selfie just popped out at me. And that was this one here. I just love how the colours and angles seemed to work out just right. It's not one of the ones I planned out in my head, but I happened to have my camera on me and was in a Self Portrait mood and voila! The moment happened.
