Star Trek: The Next Generation Re-Watch continues with ...

Ménage à Troi
Season 3, Episode 24

  • Lwaxana Troi catches the eye of Ferengi DaiMon Tog at a celebratory function on The Enterprise after a conference that included the Ferengi and Betazoids for the first time. Although Lwaxana thwarts Tog's advances, he persists and eventually kidnaps her along with Riker and Deanna who were trying to enjoy shore leave on Betazad.
    Character Focus:
    • Lwaxana Troi is the focus being the object of desire and therefore kidnapped by the Ferengi along with Deanna Troi and Riker
    • DaiMon Tog of the Ferengi is key here, as it is he who kidnaps Lwaxana, Deanna and Riker. But if you, like I, found the other Ferengi Dr. Farek familiar you have keen Star Trek eyes as we are used to seeing him with different make up as it's Ethan Phillips who plays Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager.
    • Back on The Enterprise, Wesley is on the precipice of major changes as he's one step away from going to Star Fleet Academy but instead of heading to take the oral exam he stays and helps solve the mystery of where Riker, Deanna and Lwaxana have been taken. Although he misses the opportunity to enroll right now, Picard gives him a field promotion from Acting Ensign to Ensign, which means it's time to trade in the greys for a red shirt.

What I remembered about this episode:
    • I think what I remember most about this one was that it was shocking that The Ferengi's transport Deanna and Lwaxana naked. I actually still find that shocking.
What I noticed now, that I didn't notice then:
    • Wow, as much as Deanna and Riker both insist they are 'just friends', they certainly seem to act as more than friends when they are down on the planet! Not judging of course, just...noting.
What feels different now, than then:
    • I think it's ludicrous that Deanna doesn't really try for any means of escape, and not only leaves that to Riker and Lwaxana, but also that The Enterprise only expects/anticipates that Riker would make a move to contact them. There have been many kidnapping attempts on the show, and I'm sad to say that it's always the guys that work towards escape and the ladies not so much. If memory serves, this may change, but it's still pretty surprizing.
    • It's pretty surprizing that Wesley is super-keen to take his oral exam and head on over to Starfleet Academy, but never gave thought to the fact that he'll be away from the crew, his home and than when he's placed afterwards he might not even be on The Enterprise (Data gives the numbers on how unlikely this is). It's another notation to the ship and it's crew being the family for the people that are there, Deanna also mentions this to her mother when it's suggested she get married and have children to start her own family.
    What remained the same:
    • Picard awkwardly quoting poetry (or prose?) in a 'challenge' to Tog for the love of Lwaxana was hilarious! Now that is one awesome way to put up a fight. He does of course also threaten to fire phasers, and I'm pretty sure Worf would have fired!
    What I see differently:
    • Although a fair amount of the capture, seduction, etc is played for laughs, it still is pretty horrible that Tog would do this. I wonder if there are ramifications after this, although it's mentioned I don't think their are.
    • It's noted that Ferengi codes are near impossible to break, I found that suprizing although it aligns with their profit-driven tendencies. I didn't think technologically they would be superior in any way.
    Great Quotes:
    • "Gentlemen, I have the utmost confidence in your ability to perform... the impossible." - Picard
    • "You've got to enjoy life, relax, like I do. Find yourself the right man. Think of your future. Hm - think of *my* future." - Lwaxana
    • "My love... is a fever, longing still, For that which longer nurseth the disease." - Picard, in an attempt to 'win back' Lwaxana
    Left off at:
Lwaxana offers herself to Tog in exchange for the release of Deanna & Riker, and after such Picard successfully scares/wins back Lwaxana over Tog. Also, Picard promotes Wesley to full Ensign after he misses the opportunity to enter Star Fleet Academy while continuing efforts to find the missing crew members.
